John Corrigan Academic Promotion Portfolio

For Promotion to Associate Professor

Teaching / Courses

Overview

Since being hired as a assistant professor I have assisted in writing new courses, JPII 5302 Philosophy of Wojtyla, updating existing courses, JPII 5300, and JPII 5305, and developing curriculum changes as in the case of the alternate Final Project JPII 5345 which I wrote and deliver now each semester.

I continue to develop a wide array of instruction materials either in courses I personally wrote or in ones that I teach.  I develop supplemental pdf's to explain difficult material or outline background information. I produce my own video recorded lectures with original material.  A student favorite are the video lecture notes which allow the student to reference the video lecture material from a written format and document it.  In addition I make my journal articles and book available through links where those prove to be good explanatory aids to the course material.

Teaching Philosophy

In my view, the professor should be a model for lifelong learning.  The student should be able to see evidence of diligent study in the acquisition of knowledge in the professor.  I hope to inspire the student to this lifelong pursuit without causing mere imitation.

Through my work I have sought to integrate the Thomist Tradition with the personalist tradition.
My area of specialization in research is the philosophy of Karol Wojtyła.  That is not to say that I think philosophy should be carried out merely from the perspective of the history of philosophy but in my experience, he offers us a set of keys capable of unlocking lacunae in the history of philosophy and of offering insights regarding the apparently divergent accounts of human experience as expressed in ancient /medieval philosophy on the one hand and the modern philosophies of consciousness on the other.
It was the study of political science and social issues in the Principality of Liechtenstein which led me to a life-long passion for philosophy and Catholic social teaching.  I strive to live the principles of Ex Corde Ecclessia as a professor and continually review the document.
I took a broad array and excess of courses and extra credits under many instructors and great guest lecturers in order to accomplish something of the ancient approach to education found in Plato, Aristotle and the students of Confucius; to absorb the masters for many years.
For twenty years, my experience as a professor included teaching a wide variety of courses in Philosophy and Theology.  I have taught in the classroom and online.  These courses include, among others; “Introduction to Philosophy”, “Introduction to John Paul II”, “Faith and Reason”, “Logic and Critical Thinking”, "Medical Ethics", "Business Ethics”, "Justice and Immigration", "Human Trafficking", "Contentment and Consumerism" and "Existentialism in Social Institutions" as well as multiple courses on Catholic Doctrine and electives for the Theology Department.

I also taught in the “Organizational Leadership” program where I taught courses for over eight years.  My work load often exceeded four to five courses per semester for eight years plus.  I have excellent student evaluations for twenty years and have a sample of those from my more recent years including online courses.

Evaluations
During his time at Immaculata as the Assistant Dean of our Program Colonel, Dr. Wrightson mentioned to me that I was a highly rated professor in classroom student evaluations.  We remain in contact and he is listed among my references.  I am often complimented as having the ability to “break-it-down.”

Some Comments from UST Students:

Fall 2023 JPII 5305 Faith and Reason

"Dr. John Corrigan is an excellent teacher and efficiently directed our discussion groups and answered our questions with great knowledge. He is kind, attentive and insightful, while letting students explore and develop the important concepts. I am grateful to the University for providing such an excellent professor for us this semester. The course content is an important step in my understanding of the work of St. John Paul II. The lectures and required reading greatly enhanced my knowledge and thinking process."

"Dr. Corrigan brought a lot of insightful information from his international studies/travels abroad and classroom experiences. Dr. Corrigan's multi-lingual background I think was very helpful too in our discussions about the various contributors in phenomenology"

"Dr. Corrigan's enthusiasm and encouraging commentary was also an important part of my faith journey. I hope to have Dr. Corrigan again as my professor/teacher."

Spring 2024 JPII 5300 Redemptor Hominis

"The literature for this class, presentations and zoom classes were of high quality learning. Thank you so much for being so organized and having so much material ready for us to learn better."

"The course was essentially an opportunity to learn about new ideas and authors, and then have an opportunity every week to create a piece of writing that expanded my own thought while cementing the main ideas of the readings into my mind. Sometimes I found Blackboard a little disorganized, but John Corrigan was always able to clarify any assignments very quickly."
